About the FoH Project

Welcome to the Future of Healthcare website

The rapid integration of AI in the medical sector has revolutionised healthcare, offering improved diagnostics, treatments, and patient outcomes. However, this technological leap presents a critical challenge: traditional vocational education and training (VET) systems for healthcare professionals often lag behind in equipping learners with the necessary blend of technical, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills. The future of healthcare demands not just proficiency in working with AI-enabled medical devices but also the ability to communicate empathetically with patients and collaborate effectively with the European colleagues.
FoH – Framework of the Future of Healthcare is a European cooperation project that supports healthcare education and training providers in responding to the rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into healthcare practice. The project develops a forward-looking competence framework that combines AI literacy, ethical responsibility, and human-centred care, enabling current and future healthcare professionals to critically interpret AI-supported recommendations, communicate transparently with patients, and retain professional autonomy. By bridging vocational education, ethics, and emerging digital realities, FoH aims to ensure that AI enhances the quality, safety, and dignity of healthcare—placing people, not technology, at the centre of care.
The FoH project will contribute to the modernisation of healthcare education under Erasmus+ by bridging the gap between technological advancements and human-centric skills. It will prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals to not only work with AI but also uphold the compassionate and collaborative spirit that defines excellent medical care.

The FoH project is implemented through a phased and practice-oriented approach that links research, framework development, and real-world validation. Following the research phase, which includes focus groups and stakeholder consultations to identify competency gaps and ethical challenges in AI-supported healthcare, the project develops the FoH Framework and competence descriptors. These outputs are then implemented and tested through dedicated VET workshops, where healthcare educators, trainers, and professionals engage in hands-on learning, scenario-based discussions, and reflective practice. In parallel, the project designs and develops the FoH digital platform, which hosts learning resources, training materials, and guidance aligned with the FoH Framework. Continuous feedback from workshop participants and platform users informs iterative refinement, supported by quality assurance mechanisms and transnational cooperation to ensure relevance, usability, and transferability across healthcare education and training systems.

The FoH project delivers tangible and sustainable results that strengthen the capacity of healthcare education and training providers to integrate Artificial Intelligence responsibly. Core outputs include the FoH Competence Framework, defining essential AI, ethical, and human-centred competencies, and the FoH digital platform, which provides structured access to training content, educational guidelines, and practical resources for VET and higher education contexts. Through the implementation of VET workshops, the project validates these outputs in real training environments, equipping educators and healthcare professionals with the skills to critically interpret AI-supported recommendations, communicate transparently with patients, and uphold professional responsibility. In addition, FoH generates evidence-based insights from transnational research activities, ensuring that all results are grounded in real-world practice and contribute to improved quality, safety, and trust in future healthcare systems.

The Methodological FoH Framework provides a structured and evidence-based approach for integrating Artificial Intelligence into healthcare education while preserving ethical responsibility and human-centred care. It defines how AI-related competencies should be developed, taught, and assessed, combining technical AI literacy with ethical reasoning, therapeutic communication, and professional accountability. Grounded in research findings and validated through VET workshops, the framework guides educators and training providers in designing learning pathways that ensure AI supports clinical judgment, patient safety, and trust rather than replacing human decision-making.

The FoH Platform is developed as a digital learning and knowledge-sharing environment that operationalises the Methodological FoH Framework. It provides healthcare educators, trainers, and learners with structured access to training modules, learning resources, case-based scenarios, and guidance aligned with the FoH competence framework. Designed to support vocational education and training (VET) and higher education contexts, the platform enables flexible, self-paced, and guided learning, while reinforcing ethical reflection, critical interpretation of AI-supported information, and human-centred decision-making in healthcare practice.

The VET workshops are implemented as a core validation and capacity-building activity of the FoH project, translating the Methodological FoH Framework into practical learning experiences. Delivered in vocational education and training contexts, the workshops engage healthcare educators, trainers, and professionals in scenario-based learning, ethical reflection, and guided discussion on AI-supported healthcare practice. The workshops test and refine the FoH competence framework and platform resources in real training environments, ensuring that AI literacy, professional responsibility, and human-centred care are effectively integrated into education and training programmes.
