Essential Learning Points From This Episode

The FoH – Future of Healthcare project has officially started, marking an important milestone for a consortium of European partners committed to strengthening the digital and ethical capacities of healthcare professionals in an increasingly AI-driven environment. The partnership, coordinated by Munster Technological University (Ireland) and involving organisations from Poland, Czechia, Türkiye, and Italy, held its first online meeting in December, launching a collaborative initiative that will run for 24 months (December 2025 – November 2027). The project aims to address the growing need for healthcare workers to understand, critically evaluate, and responsibly use artificial intelligence technologies in clinical and educational contexts.

The healthcare sector is experiencing rapid digital transformation, with AI-enabled medical devices, predictive analytics, and digital health platforms increasingly influencing decision-making processes in hospitals and healthcare institutions. While these technologies offer tremendous opportunities to improve diagnosis, treatment, and efficiency, they also raise important ethical and professional challenges. Healthcare professionals must therefore develop new competencies that allow them to interpret AI-generated data critically, communicate its implications to patients, and maintain human-centred care in technologically advanced environments. The FoH project responds directly to these needs by creating innovative learning resources and training opportunities tailored for vocational education and training (VET) in the healthcare sector.

Over the coming months, the consortium will work together to develop a Future of Healthcare Competence Framework, a methodological guide identifying the key digital, analytical, and ethical competencies that healthcare professionals will need in the near future. This framework will be based on research activities, focus groups, and consultations with healthcare professionals, educators, and digital health experts. The aim is to ensure that vocational training systems remain aligned with labour market developments and technological innovations in healthcare.

Building on this framework, the project will also create a digital FoH learning platform designed to support healthcare professionals, VET learners, and educators in developing practical skills related to artificial intelligence and digital health tools. The platform will provide structured training modules covering topics such as AI fundamentals, AI tools in healthcare, data analysis and management, ethical and legal considerations, evaluation of AI technologies, and communication and teamwork in digital healthcare environments. These learning resources will combine technical knowledge with human-centred competencies, ensuring that future healthcare professionals can integrate technological innovation while maintaining empathy, ethical responsibility, and patient-focused care.

Another important component of the project will be the implementation of VET workshops and pilot training sessions, which will test the framework and platform with real users, including healthcare professionals, students, and trainers. These workshops will provide valuable feedback that will allow the partnership to refine the developed tools and ensure their practical relevance for the healthcare sector. In addition to training activities, the consortium will actively disseminate project results through conferences, professional networks, and digital communication channels to reach a wider audience across Europe.

Through this collaborative effort, the FoH project seeks to strengthen the digital readiness of healthcare education systems while promoting responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence. By combining technological innovation with human-centred values, the project aims to prepare healthcare professionals who can effectively navigate the opportunities and challenges of the digital health era.
